We lived at 43 Gould Ave., Malden, MA with my grandmother's house at 35 Gould Ave., so that the two homes were adjacent to each other with a vacant lot in between owned by my grandmother.
My grandparents, Augustus James Bartlett and Lois Bartlett, on my father's death, asked that I live with them to releave my mother of the care of one child. I went next door to live with my grandparents.
My grandfather died on August 9, 1920 when I was 5 years old and my grandmother carried on bringing me up until I was in Grammer School where-upon I went to live with my mother next door at 43 Gould Ave.
My grandmother was a beautiful lady, living in her house until her death on April 9, 1943. She seemed to know that she would soon die, and marked all the pieces of furniture by placing labels on the backs of each piece with the name of the grandchild she wanted it to go to. The chest of drawers was allotted to me.
My Grandfather, Augustus J. Bartlett, was born on a farm in Searsmont, ME., February 6, 1858. It was customary in those days for the father to give a pocket watch to any son who left the farm to go to the big city, Boston, in search of a job, with the idea that if the son was not successful, he could pawn the watch to get money to return home to the farm.
Augustus, in 1876, arrived in Boston (age 18) and took a job as a teemster with a Mr. Caverly in Faneuil Hall (North) Market(place). He saved (from) his salary and learned the business of Butter, Cheese and Eggs, and when married my grandmother, Caverly gave him this chest of drawers. He took over the complete business at a later date.
As I remember Augustus, He would take me to Faneuil Hall (Marketplace) to show me the business, and allowed me to use the "cheese-taster" to sample the tubs of cheese in case I was hungry. His brother, Solon, came to Boston and with "Gus" became "Bartlett Brothers". They were fortunate to corner the market in Butter, Cheese and Eggs. The Bartlett sign(s) still hangs in the Faneuil Hall Market Place (Quincy Market Building).
I have given this chest to my son John and his wife recently.

Priscilla Ann Morse
Priscilla Ann Morse was born on 16 May 1950 at Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA.1 She was the daughter of Graham Augustus Morse and Priscilla Fall.1 Priscilla Ann Morse died on 18 January 1975 at Granite Lake, East Sullivan, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, USA, at age 24 a car accident on her way to teach school in East Sullivan, New Hampshire.1
Priscilla Ann Morse also went by the name of Pam Morse.1 She taught Grammar School at Barnstead, New Hampshire.1
Story by Graham A. Morse

Priscilla, my daughter was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, when I was Chief Engineer Quality Control at Springfield Armory.

She was a charming person and loved the outdoors, camping, hiking and skiing. She excelled in all outdoor sporting events. She preferred living in a tree (sleeping) while at the University of New Hampshire in a dormitory. She walked many miles on the Appalachian Trail from its start in the south and wanted to complete the trail in Maine.

When she tired of walking the trail, she would bum a ride home with a jacket I still have, “Poor Geology Student Needs Ride”. The truckers were kind in her travels and when their route varied from hers, they would radio ahead to another available truck going in her direction.

She received her college degree and commenced a teaching career in the public school system.

She was very outgoing and loved taking trips by herself to places she had read about.

A memorable plaque is placed on the Appalachian Trail on the rivers edge with a log lean-to, to be used by other trail walkers where the Appalachian Trail crosses the border from New Hampshire to Maine.

While teaching, she called me and said she would drive over to my house in Spofford, New Hampshire. It was cold and the roads slippery. She had a Volkswagon coupe and while rounding a curve on the way the car could not grip the slippery road and at Granite Lake, she was killed on a sharp curve.

Her ashes were scattered, at her wish, on the top of Mount Monadnock, a mountain she loved.

I love the etching, “A Mountain is a World Unto Itself – Magnificent” – Pam Morse 1950-1975. This was the inscription on a bronze plaque that was attached to a large rock just above the lean-to. (It was built with money donated by the family to the AMC at her death).1
